3 journaling prompts for when you feel stuck

When you can't see the way forward, writing can help you find it.

Feeling stuck often means you're holding too many competing things in your head at once. Journaling doesn't solve problems — but it creates enough space to see them more clearly.

These three prompts work best when you're not sure what you want, what's blocking you, or what the next step might look like. Give yourself 10–15 minutes with each. Don't edit as you write.

Prompt 1: What am I actually tired of?

Not the surface answer — dig a little. Tired of the commute, yes. But underneath that? Tired of feeling unseen. Tired of doing things that don't feel like mine. Tired of waiting for permission.

Write until you get to something that surprises you.

Prompt 2: If I already knew the answer, what would it be?

This sounds strange but it works. We often do know — we've just talked ourselves out of it, or convinced ourselves it's impractical, or we're scared of what it means to actually name it.

Write as if you already know. See what comes.

Prompt 3: What would I do if I weren't worried about what other people thought?

Not "what would make me happy" — that's often too abstract. This one is more specific. It surfaces the things you're quietly editing out of your own life.

There's a downloadable worksheet below with space for all three prompts, plus a short reflection exercise to close. Print it, or use it on your tablet.
