Feeling overwhelmed? Start here
A gentle first step when everything feels like too much.
When overwhelm hits, the instinct is often to push harder — to get on top of the list, fix the thing, sort yourself out. But overwhelm is rarely a productivity problem. It's usually a signal that your nervous system is maxed out and needs something different from you right now.
Start with the smallest possible thing.
Not the most important thing. Not the most urgent thing. The smallest. Make a cup of tea. Step outside for two minutes. Write down three things that are actually in your control today.
Overwhelm shrinks when we stop treating it as a failure and start treating it as information. Your body is telling you something. The question isn't "how do I get through this?" — it's "what do I actually need right now?"
A few things that genuinely help:
- Name what you're feeling out loud or on paper. "I feel overwhelmed because..." — finishing that sentence creates just enough distance to breathe.
- Break the next hour into a single task. Not the day. Not the week. One hour.
- Let something go. Not forever — just for today. Overwhelm is often the result of trying to hold too many things at once.
If this is a pattern rather than a moment, that's worth exploring with someone. Our practitioners work gently with stress, anxiety and the kind of low-grade exhaustion that accumulates over time. You don't need to be in crisis to ask for support.
